I have used the first three for various businesses I have helped set up in the past. They are all good.

How To Search For A Domain Name

For this example I will use Godaddy.com to search for domain names. In Google do a search for Godaddy.com. On the website you will find a Domain Name Search box for you to look for domains.

In the box above type the name of your business or keywords you you wish your business to be based on. Godaddy will give you a whole list of names with extensions to choose from. There is a possibility that you domain extension may have been taken. For example you are looking for Custom T Shirt Printing.com and its taken. You can look for CustomTShirtPrinting.com.au or CustomTShirtPrintingOnline.com.au.

How Can I find free Keywords?

You can use one of the many free online tools on the web. Here is a list of some keyword tools:

  • Semrush.com
  • Kwfinder.com
  • WordStream.com

Where To Register A Domain

Once you have found the domain of your choice its time to register it. Let me show you how to do it in GoDaddy.

Step 1

  1. Click the shopping cart icon to the right of the domain you like to register from a list similar to the one above. Your domain will be added to the shopping cart. You will notice in the top right of the page that there is now one item (domain) in the cart. Click “Continue to Cart”.
  2. You will be given the option to register the domain for multiple years. Choose the best option for you. You will get a discount if you take more than one years registration.
  3. You will also be given the option here to add hosting via cPanel Hosting. This is a monthly fee and can be paid annually. Hosting normally works out to be $12 or more per month. Budget for around $200 a year.
  4. Another thing to keep in mind is security. One of the options offered to you which is optional is getting website security for your domain. This will tighten security and you will get less spam mail and hackers attack your site. I suggest taking this out. Its a small annual fee.

Registering The Domain

The next step is to submit your registration of the domain to GoDaddy.com. Once you have paid for the domain its is yours until you should cancel it.

I normally pay for my domains either by card or by PayPal.

In my next post I shall show you how to host the Domain on a server. We will look at why I prefer having my domains hosted on a separate provider. All those and much more in my next post.
